Mario Puzo was born on October 15, 1920 in The Bronx, New York. His mother, Yolanda, was an Italian immigrant. His father, Angelo, was an Italian-born shoemaker. Puzo grew up in poverty and didn’t finish high school. Instead, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he attended City College of New York and then Columbia University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in literature in 1949.
Puzo began writing fiction in the 1950s and published his first novel, The Dark Arena, in 1955. He went on to write several more novels, including The Fortunate Pilgrim (1965), The Sicilian (1984), and The Fourth K (1991). He wrote the screenplay for the 1972 film The Godfather, which was based on his novel of the same name. He later wrote the screenplays for The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990).
