    Early Life

    Mary Kay Letourneau was born on January 30, 1962, in Orange County, California. Growing up in a strict Catholic household, Letourneau was expected to adhere to her family’s religious beliefs. Letourneau attended Arizona State University, where she studied journalism and education. After college, she began teaching at Shorewood Elementary School in Seattle, Washington.

    Education and Career

    In 1996, Letourneau began teaching at Shorewood Elementary School, where she met Vili Fualaau, a 12-year-old student. The two began a sexual relationship, which was discovered by authorities in 1997. Letourneau was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree rape of a child. She was sentenced to six months in prison, but was released after three months after she promised the court that she would not have any contact with Fualaau.

    After her release, Letourneau violated the terms of her probation and was arrested again. She was subsequently sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. While in prison, Letourneau gave birth to two children fathered by Fualaau.

    Personal Life

    Letourneau was released from prison in 2004 and married Fualaau the following year. The two have remained together since then and are raising their two daughters together.
